FROM THE FARMERS

Anna loves to tell the story about how I gave myself a double hernia at four years old, digging a hole in the ground for fun. Sometimes we Baumanns keep trying things when we probably ought to just quit! Growing eggplant is another example of a task requiring persistence (or stubbornness). We’ve been planting it earnestly for at least the last five years, and we’ve always failed. Flea beetles have been the biggest challenge, but even when we’ve gotten the plants to set fruit the results have been less than satisfying. I once asked an old timer at the Lexington Farmers Market, who had beautiful eggplant, what it takes to grow them. He said without hesitation that you’ve got to spray them every day with Malathion! This comment not only dissuaded me from wanting to grow the crop, but also from eating conventionally produced eggplant.

This year we pulled out all the stops, and decided to let the eggplant transplants get as big as possible before planting them in the ground inside one of our high tunnels. We knew eggplant likes it hot, and this combination seemed to do the trick. Our organic eggplants look great, even though it’s late in the season. Now the challenge will be figuring out how to scale up production, and get the crop to come in a little earlier in the season.
