FALL WORK

FROM THE FARMERS

As some of the farm work slows down this time of year, lots of other jobs begin to surface. The rain yesterday provided us with a good opportunity to get caught up on some of the farm office work, and we also had a great meeting with Nathan Routt from the Kentucky Center for Agriculture and Rural Development. Nathan has been helping us work through an extensive farm business plan that will help us make better decisions related to our work, as well as keep us on track to reach our goals. We see this service as invaluable for small family farm businesses, and we are grateful for the powers that be choosing to fund these efforts.

Along with a lot of desk work this fall, we’ve still got a fair amount of planting and field work on the agenda. We’ve begun work on another high tunnel hoop house we hope to complete by the end of the month, and then we will move on to a 7,000 ft. fencing project for the month of November. Some of our fall crops are finally starting to surpass the seedling stage and really show some good growth, but we are expecting a lull in our CSA shares over the next several of weeks. Part of this is due to poor timing, and part is due to the cover crop regrowth in our no till project. Most all of our no-till plantings were stressed or shaded by the regrowth, and resulted in a total crop loss. Given the circumstances, and the quality of our later plantings, we are planning on extending our CSA season beyond the original end date of the third week of November. We are expecting to have some nice crops coming out of the hoop houses, so we will be doing “BONUS” deliveries for all our members after the week of Thanksgiving. We’ll give you more detail as we get close to the end, but wanted to share this with you now.
