FROM THE FARMERS

We had a nice time getting together with all the folks that made it out to the  farm potluck. There was some amazing food on the table, and I don’t think anyone left hungry. As the seasons change and the farm begins to quiet, we are pondering all the ways that we are nourished by it regardless of the season. Having farm gatherings and potlucks nourish us in a big way and is  something we talk about all summer, but can’t seem to find the time to do in the height of the growing season. So, this winter we invite you back to the farm to gather around the table. There’ll be no shortage of things to talk about and collectively ponder over a pot of soup and warming beverages.  We’ll set some dates and pass those along…Look for the first one to be in mid-January.

Going into the off season also allows some head space to process the growing season. Mistakes and lessons learned are fresh on our minds. Taking time to reflect and get feedback from our customers is just as critical a process as selecting and ordering the right mix of seeds.  Expect to hear more from us about how you can share your thoughts on this season.

One unexpected challenge came in August when something got into the hen house. We have entertained various stories as to what caused the loss of so many hens. An owl, a bobcat, coyotes all have been suspects. But at the end of the day, we just don’t know what happened. We do know that we, along with many of you, have really missed having eggs. We looked for more laying hens raised to our standards to no avail. Eventually, we resigned ourselves to the fact that we wouldn’t be able to provide eggs for the rest of the season. But, we are readying the brooder house for baby chicks come late winter and scratching our heads as to ways to outsmart our hungry farm neighbors.
